Sista Adama Jewel visits from LA to teach this all-levels West African dance class. She’s the founder of African Soul International and has been teaching for decades.

This workshop is a part of AwakenArts’ 1st Dance, Drum, andDecolonization. Fondly referred to by Awaken’s members as DDD, the project’s goal is to increase cultural literacy on the UCI campus, and to counteract our Eurocentric dance curriculum that fails to truly educate us, looking to address its distorted presentation of history and constant erasures of people of color. Focusing on the African Diaspora, students will be given the tools to view dance critically as it is informed directly by anti-blackness, colonialism, imperialism, black resistance movements, while recognizing continuing social injustices both responded to and perpetuated within the arts, with dance as a vehicle to embody and learn about histories and contexts.
