Join filmmaker Danielle Smith as she talks about the work of Sandblast, an organisation fighting for the human rights of the Saharawi people. View her film ‘Beat of Distance Hearts – Art of Revolution in Western Sahara’, a documentary that explores the collective experience of exile, loss and war through the lives of Saharawi poets, singers and visual artists.

Designer Florie Salnot will lead two sampler workshops using sand and plastic bottles, resources available to the refugee community of the Western Sahara. Florie was introduced to the Saharawi refugees by the filmmaker Danielle Smith and in response to their situation Florie designed a specific craft technique that transforms discarded plastic bottles into pieces of jewellery. The technique only uses hot sand, simple hand tools and paint. This craft was introduced to the Saharawis refugees through live workshops to empower them economically and culturally.

Music will be brought to you by the El-Andaluz Trio who are the leading exponents in London of classical Arabic and Andalusian music. Musicians Karim Dellali playing the darbucka, Yazid Fentazi and Redha Boudebagh each playing the Oud, promise to take you on a wonderful journey around the southern shores of the Mediterranean, often beginning with a poetic and reflective Andalusian Nuba, then travelling on to the trance-like Sufi music of the Sahara.
