This documentary shines a light on the often overlooked story of the magnetic, enigmatic Justin Fashanu – the world’s first £1 million black football player, and first openly gay football player, whose life was tragically cut short.

At a time when British society was struck by intense racial and class division, regionally-raised black brothers Justin, and later John, Fashanu excelled in football and found success that propelled them into the spotlight. Justin came out publicly in 1990, and almost 3 decades later still stands alone as one of the only openly gay footballers.

The tragedy of Justin’s life is a curiosity almost stranger than fiction. Justin initially felt pride in his success and the attention and money it brought, but later found himself bound by insecurity and pressure. Don’t miss this engrossing and vital documentary about one of the UK’s most unforgettable and whitewashed queer stories.

Short before the feature:
Birds of a Feather / dir. Dann Parry / UK 2017 / 4’30
An emotionally wresting animation that packs as much punch into its four and a half minutes as most features do in two hours, about the trauma that homophobia (internalised or external) can do to ourselves and our communities.

Followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Adam Darke & Jon Carey, hosted by BlackOutUK.
