A Trump America: Hip Hop Fights Back – A Playlist

With ‘A Trump America’ becoming reality last Friday at his inauguration, I’ve decided to create a playlist made up of songs straight out of the hip hop community that perfectly reflects the way the culture feels about Trump’s rise to power. Before the election when referring to Donald Trump the community would usually reference him in a positive light, highlighting his wealth and his alleged skills as a businessman. Now, however, there has been a complete reversal and many artists have taken the time to include their feelings about Trump in their songs and performances. At times like this, protest and a sense of togetherness are needed and I feel these songs provide just that. I advise you to research these songs on www.genius.com and read the lyrics and all of the messages behind them.

Joey Bada$$ – Land of the Free

Stand out lyrics:

“Full house on my hands, the cards I was dealt

Three K’s, Two A’s in AmeriKKKa”

YG – FDT ft Nipsey Hustle

Stand out lyrics:

“He got me appreciatin’ Obama way more

Hey Donald, and everyone that follows

You gave us your reason to be President, but we hate yours”

YG – FDT Part 2 ft Macklemore and G.Eazy

Stand out lyrics:

“I’ma stay right here, I ain’t livin’ in fear

With my people who are Muslims, Mexican and queer

And we ain’t gonna let you fuck up four years

Ain’t gonna let you fuck up for years”

Common – Letter to the Free

Stand out lyrics:

“Sweet land of liberty, incarcerated country

Shot me with your ray-gun

And now you want to trump me

Prison is a business, America’s the company

Investing in injustice, fear and long suffering

We staring in the face of hate again

The same hate they say will make America great again”

Aminé – Caroline (Live Jimmy Fallon Version)

Stand out lyrics:

“You can never make America great again

All you ever did was make this country hate again”
Over these next four years, I’m expecting and hoping that there will be a large number of songs that need to be added to this list and through all these songs, the culture can come unite and come together in these wild times
