2012 Debates Overview

Overview

Shades of Noir(SoN) conducts University-wide debates (primarily internal to University of the Arts London) which will build up to three Big Debates in 2012 that will incorporate external involvement both in the panel and audience. The topics for discussion are ‘Race in Creative Higher Education’, ‘Race in Creative & Cultural Sector’ and ‘Race in Creative Practice’. Questions will be put forward by UAL staff, students, alumni, and it would also be appropriate to include a wider audience (particularly for the Big Debates) in posing questions via email and web-based submission systems (link). These questions will be presented to the SoN Steering Group at UAL for selection.

College debates

There will be several college staff discussions within and across University of the Arts London Colleges. These are predominately staff-only events which aim to support a place for discourse amongst staff and academics in which broad contexts of race, creative education and pedagogy can be brought to the forefront.

The first college debate will be held at London College of Fashion within the programmed Staff Learning and Teaching Day 12th September 2011.

Open Debates (Big Debate)

There will be 3 Big Debates being hosted by different colleges within University of the Arts London, engaging in the discourse of race. Race in this context relates to the visual forms of a human, as well as culture, ancestry and identity.
